Mai Fanglayan, an Igorot actor, clinched the Best New Actress title at the 2019 Urduja Film Festival. Let's dig into the details of how this happened.

The Film Journey: "Tanabata's Wife"

Fanglayan made her mark in "Tanabata's Wife," filmed in Buguias, Benguet, back in 2018. The film, part of the 2018 ToFarm Film Festival, blended Japanese, Kankanaey, and Ilocano languages. Charlson Ong, Lito Casaje, and Choy Pangilinan directed the movie, showcasing Fanglayan's acting debut.

Cultural Diversity On Screen

Fanglayan's portrayal of Fas-ang, Tanabata's wife, not only marked her debut but also earned her a major acting nomination from the Gawad Urian. The film embraced diverse languages, highlighting the richness of storytelling.

Awards Night: Best New Actress

The 6th Urduja Film Festival unfolded at the Sison Auditorium in Lingayen, Pangasinan. Fanglayan took home the Best New Actress award, expressing gratitude for the opportunity "Tanabata's Wife" provided.

"Thank you so much, Urduja Film Festival, for choosing me as your Best New Actress," Fanglayan stated. "Thank you so much, 'Tanabata's Wife,' for the opportunity to play the role of Fas-ang, Tanabata's wife. Because of that, I was able to work with other great actors and actresses as well as directors and production teams in the industry. Thank you so much."

Global Recognition: Collaborative Success

Teaming up with Japanese actor Miyuki Kamimura, Fanglayan's success extended beyond borders. Both actors secured Best Actor and Best Actress awards at the ToFarm Film Festival, showcasing their collaborative prowess.

The Future Unveiled

Fanglayan, a Mass Communication graduate from Saint Louis University in Baguio City, continues to ascend in her career. Upcoming projects include the Metro Manila Film Festival 2019 entry "Culion" and a collaboration with Brillante Mendoza.

In the world of Philippine cinema, Fanglayan's journey shines brightly. Her Best New Actress win at the Urduja Film Festival marks a significant milestone, emphasizing the power of diverse narratives and the rise of a talented actor.
