Meet Cordillera's First Doctor-Lawyer: A Story of Resilience and Determination

Dr. Maria Linda Gabit-Gavino, a native of Tabuk City and Mangali, Tanudan, Kalinga, made history as the first doctor-lawyer in the Cordillera region.

Despite facing false accusations, being dropped from the roll, and failing the bar exam in 2015, Dr. Gabit-Gavino never gave up on her dreams. She persevered and eventually achieved her goal of becoming a doctor and a lawyer. Her story is an inspiration to anyone who has faced challenges in their life.

Dr. Maria Linda Gabit-Gavino, a native of Tabuk City and Mangali, Tanudan in Kalinga, overcame false accusations, being dropped from the roll, and failing the bar exam in 2015 to become the first doctor-lawyer in the Cordillera region.

Her journey to becoming a doctor and a lawyer was challenging. In 2011, she was falsely accused of malversation of public funds, violation of Presidential Decree 1445, and administrative charges for being AWOL filed by the Civil Service Commission. These charges stemmed from her time as the Municipal Health Officer of Tanudan.

After being accused of these charges, Dr. Gabit-Gavino decided to go to law school to defend herself. She enrolled at Kalinga State University (KSU) College of Law in 2011.

In addition to the challenges she faced, Dr. Gabit-Gavino also had to balance her law school studies with her work as a resident doctor at the Holy Trinity Medical Clinic and a professor at the International School of Asia and the Pacific. She would often have to study late into the night and on weekends in order to keep up with her studies.

However, her journey was not without its setbacks. Dr. Gabit-Gavino failed the bar exam in 2015, but she didn't let that stop her. She studied harder and retook the exam the following year.

Despite the challenges, Dr. Gabit-Gavino never gave up. She knew that she wanted to become a doctor and a lawyer, and she was determined to achieve her goal. Her hard work and determination paid off, and she was able to pass the bar exam in 2016.

Her oathtaking was delayed by the pending administrative charges, but in February 2022, she was finally cleared of all charges and was able to take the oath of office as a lawyer.
