Good Samaritan: Benguet farmer donates 1,500 kilos of lettuce

A Benguet farmer contributed to his community amid the COVID-19 crisis after donating 1,500 kilograms of lettuce.

A farmer and a native of Sayangan, Atok in Benguet, said no one is buying his vegetables because of the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine so instead of rotting, he thought he would give it away for free.

In this way, PJ Haight made a helping hand in the midst of the Covid crisis after giving away 1,500 kilos of lettuce to his community.

What he did was park his truck full of nutritious lettuce at public places in the area to make it easier for residents to get his vegetables for free.

Even the Baguio City Government has been blessed.

The Cordillera Department of Agriculture has suggested that they can liaise with buyers in Manila so that farmers can earn more and provide more for the people of Manila.

“Kung merong mga hindi makabenta, inire-relay natin sa possible buyers sa Maynila. Yung maliliit na coop, tayo na rin mismo ang tumutulong sa kanila para madeliver nila sa Maynila,” said DA- Cordillera regional executive director Cameron Odsey.

The region exports 1 million kilograms of vegetables daily, he added.
