Lightning strike tragedy claims the lives of two Philippine Army soldiers and injures four others in Kalinga.

On May 12, 2024, a devastating incident occurred at the boundary of Lubuagan and Pasil in Kalinga, Philippines, resulting in the loss of two brave soldiers and injuries to four others. The soldiers, members of the 54th Infantry Battalion, were on duty conducting a security operation against communist terrorist groups when tragedy struck during a thunderstorm.

The Incident

Around 4:30 p.m. local time, lightning struck the troops, claiming the lives of Corporal Andrew Monterubio and Private First Class Inmongog Aronchay. The lightning bolt caught them off guard, also leaving Sergeant Dennis Bananao, Private First Class Melvin Danggalan, Private First Class Abegil Awingan, and Private First Class Riel Angya injured and in need of immediate medical attention.

In a heartfelt statement, the 5th Infantry Division, led by Commander MGen. Audrey Pasia, expressed their condolences, saying, "My heart bleeds for them." The division emphasized the impact of the soldiers' sacrifice, stating, "The deaths of the two serve as an inspiration to the 5ID."

Remembering the Fallen

Corporal Monterubio, from Gamu, Isabela, and Private First Class Aronchay, from Sadanga, Mt. Province, are remembered for their service and dedication to defending the nation's security and peace. Their loss reverberates through their families, communities, and fellow soldiers, leaving a lasting mark on those who knew them.

The Aftermath

The injuries sustained by their comrades further highlight the perilous nature of military operations, where danger can strike suddenly and without warning. Sergeant Bananao, Private First Class Danggalan, Private First Class Awingan, and Private First Class Angya now face a challenging road to recovery, their sacrifices a stark reminder of the risks faced by those who serve their country.

In the wake of this tragic event, the Philippine Army mourns the loss of Corporal Monterubio and Private First Class Aronchay while rallying around their injured comrades. The incident underscores the importance of prioritizing safety measures during military operations, particularly in the face of adverse weather conditions. As the nation grieves, the bravery and dedication of these soldiers serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who defend their homeland.
